ABOUT US

Young Lives International

Young Lives is an innovative long-term international research project, investigating the causes and consequences of childhood poverty in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam. At the heart of the research is a panel survey, tracking a cohort of 12,000 children and their families in these countries over a period of 15 years (2001-2016). The project links research and policy makers and planners, so that the information produced is used to improve the quality of poor children's lives.

The project arose from DFID's and Save the Children's concerns to monitor progress towards meeting the International Development Targets and the changing situation of children, and to understand how key development policies affect child wellbeing.

The participating countries were selected from over 20 who expressed interest, in order to illustrate the effects of a range of social and economic policies on child poverty and wellbeing. These include: economic liberalisation, indebtedness and debt relief, conflict and natural disasters, and inequality. Government and civil society commitment to poverty reduction, and the existence of institutions with capacity to undertake this research were also important factors. Finally, the participating countries reflect a range of geographical, social and cultural contexts.

The project currently has funding from the British Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) till July 2006.

Young Lives Vietnam

In Vietnam, with endorsement from the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Association (VUSTA), Save the Children UK (SCUK) is collaborating with the Center For teh Analysis and Forecast (CAF) - under Vietnam Acadamy of Social Sciences and the General Statistics Office (GS0) to implement the project.

The project is being implemented in five provinces: Lao Cai, Hung Yen, Da Nang, Phu Yen, and Ben Tre. The project is tracking the fortunes of a group of 3000 children – 2,000 of them born in the year 2000/01, and 1,000 born 8 eight years earlier. These children and their households will be surveyed every three years from 2002 to 2015.

The project aims to use its research findings to influence policy change oriented towards reducing childhood poverty. The research findings will be widely disseminated to policy makers and other stakeholders through a range of appropriate channels. The project is also committed to capacity strengthening, especially regarding knowledge and understanding of childhood poverty and the use of longitudinal research methodologies.
